Who We Are
Blackhawk Ranch was formed by a small group of family and friends who share a love for the rugged mountains and history of Utah.
The adventure started in 2019 when the search for investment property in Utah coincided with the sale of a large property in the heart of Utah’s historic coal mining country. AEP (American Electric Power), a large energy company, had held the property for its considerable coal reserves; for over seventy years! Previously known as the Blackhawk Coal Company (named for the Blackhawk coal seam), the property encompasses the breathtaking sweep of the iconic Book Cliffs to the East and the end of the Wasatch Plateau to the West. Blackhawk Ranch boasts nearly a dozen coal-mining ghost towns, along with over a hundred years of mining and railroad history. This history includes the mining story of the Butch Cassidy and Gang Robbery, the Castle Gate Mine disaster of 1924, and the ghost of the White Lady- who is said to wander the roads and buildings of Spring Canyon to this day.
In addition to the vibrant history, the rugged mountains contain abundant wildlife: Elk, Deer, Moose, Cougar, Bobcat, Coyote, Turkey, Eagles, Hawks, and numerous other mammals, birds, and fish roam the hills of the Ranch. The combination of history, wildlife, and wild beauty of the property sparked immediate interest to the group. However, the sheer size and complexity of the property made its potential acquisition more of a dream than reality. Nevertheless, after more than a year of hard work, we overcame obstacles that had previously seemed insurmountable and became the owners of what is now Blackhawk Ranch. We take the stewardship of this property and its mineral, water, land, wildlife, recreational, and historical resources very seriously.
The historic photo above shows the Castle Gate formation, an iconic landmark on the property, and is the inspiration for our logo.
Today Blackhawk Ranch consists of over 20,000 acres, the vast majority of which is maintained for agricultural and recreational uses. Approximately 400 acres of Blackhawk Ranch have been rezoned for residential development. This area of Carbon County is a hidden gem, offering incredible vistas, proximity to services, excellent schools, and incredible outdoor and touristic activities. It has also been voted top 25 in the USA for remote working, boasting 100 X 100 fiber optic connection and excellent cellular service.
